Teaching Philosophy

In short, Ashley values practical, contextualized learning. Much of current higher education is heavily theoretical, and learners do not always have the chance to truly practice the knowledge that they have gained. We must avoid a dichotomy between knowledge and practice. Additionally, learners often lack the opportunities to customize what they are learning, which prevents them from making meaningful connections to the course content. To remedy such obstacles, Ashley utilizes elements of competency-based education and project-based learning (PBL). According to the Buck Institute for Education, the seven essential features of PBL are: authenticity, a challenging question or problem, student voice and choice, reflection, critique and revision, sustained inquiry, and a public product.

Background

Ashley currently serves as an adjunct instructor and a curriculum developer for different institutions of higher education. Ashley’s expertise in online education is complemented by her passion for project-based learning, which is her preferred teaching methodology. Additionally, Ashley is pursuing further education in the field of Applied Linguistics because she hopes to expand her teaching to include work as a language and culture coach. In her limited spare time, Ashley enjoys listening to worship music from different cultures, spending time outside with her family, and reading biographies.
