Championship Title: Women's Soccer win their PAC Conference

Posted: October 13, 2017

This past weekend concluded the season for women’s soccer, the team finished their season winning their PAC conference title for the first time. Even though this is the second year for the women’s program at Briercrest, the team is already showing their growth from their first year.

The team finished their season with a record of 6 wins and 2 ties. The girls were well disciplined this season, with their training beginning earlier this year in August and also adding more fitness sessions then last. As a result, the team was able to build and develop their team dynamic well before the start of the season. Coach Kassi Reimer saw a difference in her team explaining, “this was definitely a highlight as the girls really pushed themselves in practice and it payed off in our games. We have our strength and conditioning coach, Shanda Quinlan to thank for pushing our team in fitness.” This season didn’t come without its challenges though, the team had to fight through injuries with a short bench. However, the girls overcame this and were able to use their strengths to be consistent in each game and keep pushing each other as a team.

In their final weekend, the girls continued their competitive edge into the championship by beating Millar College 3-2 in the first round, Anita Frei, Emily Fell and Diana Tuttosi led the points for Briercrest. In their second game, Briercrest played Prairie Bible College and won 3-0 to advance to the finals, Abigail Neil scored for Briercrest and Anita Frei put up 2 points as well to secure the win. In an exciting finish, Briercrest once again faced Millar College in the championship game. The two teams finished regulation time in a 0-0 tie and proceeded to a shootout. Birercrest defeated Millar 2-1 in the shootout, Anita Frei and Emily Fell both scored in the final. Goaltender Hannah Ukrainetz stood out not just in the final weekend but throughout the season as well, resulting in a number of shutouts that helped the team.

Overall, coach Kassi said “a highlight for me as the coach was getting to experience how the girls loved each other and their opponents well. Throughout the season they continued to push each other towards Christ, often praying for one another in tough times. Our captain, Tori Baynton led the team well both on and off the field. This season was one for the books, and I'm excited for the future of the Briercrest soccer program and how it will continue to develop.”
